| MDS Objective
The objective of the Practical Drilling Technology (PDT) course is to equip Derrickman and Assistant Drillers with the technical tools needed to become an effective Driller. This is an introductory level five-day course that gives basic concepts and drilling principles. It ensures that the Driller has the technical knowledge necessary to be proficient in his current position. This course discusses some basics of Well Control but does not include well control certification. MDS offers both IADC WellCAP Well Control classes and IWCF Well Control classes.
The following topics are covered in the PDT course: Communication, Hole Trends, Problem Solving Model, Bits and Bit Operating Practices, Drill String Basics, Tripping Practices, Deviation & Stuck Pipe, Overview of Circulation System, Overview of Casing & Cementing, Causes of Abnormal Pressure, Mud & Mud Solids Basics, Drillout Considerations, Leak-Off Tests, Formation Integrity Tests, Well Control Red Flags and Transition Zone Indicators, Shallow Gas Kicks and Diverting, BOP Equipment Considerations, Salt Water Flows and Kick Identification, Basic Methods of Well Control (Driller's Method and Wait & Weight), Kill Sheets, Lost Circulation in Vugular Formations, H2S Safety, and basics of Workover and Completions.
